Otavalo - Ibarra & Lakes – Liberty’s Train


A completed three days tour across Imbabura province by car but also riding one of the amazing historic train´s route

The Andean mountains inspire people, creating a place that blends outstanding nature sceneries and lakes with skillful artisans who project culture and customs into finest art pieces.



We depart at 8:00 am heading north direction to the city of Otavalo. Our first visit, located at The Metropolitan District is Calderon, known for its handicrafts and marzipan (bread`s dough) figures to visit a shop with countless of them on display and to know the process admiring their elaboration. Later back on the road we will cross the broad valley of “Guayllabamba” to look out the Andean dry forest landscapes and later after some minutes turn back again to the ever green land. Afterwards, we will go to see the “Quitsato” Sundial at the latitude 0 to get to know astronomic aspects of pre-hispanic cultures by visiting the eight pointed geometric design star, which angles are given by the tilt of the earth in respect of solstices and equinoxes; We move forward to look out the impressive Imbabura Volcano next to the “Jatun Yaku” or “San Pablo” lake from “Miralago” view point, to go later to visit the south America’s most famous fair at the well know “Ponchos Fair” which expands through principal streets on Saturdays where to look and to get fascinating textile production from the skillful otavaleños, people that have made the activity of confectioning and distribution over the centuries likewise musicians and instruments elaboration; the market`s complement are the handicrafts and products made by locals of the province. Lunch in Otavalo; in the afternoon visit to “Peguche´s fall” located at the forest and county of the same name, same as “Casa Condor”, place where members of a family will show their workshop and textiles production on different design and materials same as the loom’s operation to make them, the wool process, carding, yarning, etc. Lodging at Otavalo.



(Optional visit to the animals´ market on Saturday) In the morning we start our day visiting “Peguche´s waterfall”, located at the Protected Forest and parish of the same name, where a pathway will take us to this sacred natural place of 18 meters likewise the chance to know indigenous ways of living of the place. Later we head to the higher part of it to visit the “Condor Park”, place that rescue countless of birds including the condor which is endangered. Its strategic location place it with a delightful panoramic view towards the four cardinal points with the chance to look up “Lake San Pablo” same as certain volcanoes. After enjoying the performance of some species “flying”, we continue to the “Cotacachi Cayapas Ecological Reserve”, place where the volcano of the same name makes influence in the blue-turquoise water colors of “Cuicocha Lake” which highlights the view same as the impressive landscape enclosed by hills, where we will hit one of the short treks. We continue to “Cotacachi” town, recognized due to the good quality of life on citizens same as to keep magnificent fame on leather confectioning and designing items, place where we get some time to visit its shops. Lunch, to visit later “San Antonio de Ibarra”, known as the “cradle” of the wooden carvers, place to visit a workshop where the finest art pieces are made, likewise the chance to know different techniques to make them. Lodging.




We start our last day in the artisans and lake´s land at 9:00 am with a panoramic view of Ibarra city from one of its higher places, Michael the Archangel´s view point from where we could also see the “Blood`s lake” or “Yahuarcocha” due to blood spilled during battles carried out during the conquest of the Incas over the local Caranquis in the old times. Later we head to the train station to board the “Liberty’s Train” which will take us in an approximately one hour ride to the community of Salinas where we will be welcomed by an afro Ecuadorian cultural performance to continue later to activities such as; visit to the communitarian shop with the chance to get products from the area or the “Salt Museum” visit, which is possible to reach after a short walk through town, place that is complemented with the explanation of this mineral extraction activity. Lunch included, to aboard later the train to Ibarra from where we transfer back to Quito.
